Personified Chair

This was a collaboration between me and one of my good friends, Natalie. We gave ourselves the brief of the personification of Charles Dickens' character from Great Expectations 'Miss Havisham' in the form of a chair installation. We worked together in the way that Natalie designed the structure of the chair and I designed the upholstery of it then came together to construct the whole piece. Every element of detail within the chair had reasoning for it's own place. The chair form was chosen as it was the seat that held Miss Havisham ever since she was jilted at the altar. It was painted in an ivory colour and finished with lace and yellow flowers to represent her wedding dress. Mould and mossy texture were added as the house would have been damp, decaying around her. Candle wax was melted and dripped down the arm as in the novel she knocked over her candle stick and burnt to death, the same reason the lace was singed. The chair was also three legged as it is mentioned several times that she only had one shoe on.
